First Newsletter

What have we been doing?

Oh you know, just eating as many of our neighbor's strawberries as we can.

Oh yeah, and growing over 30 types of vegetables from seed.

So far, so good. Here at Wooden Hill things have been pretty much rolling along on schedule. And by schedule, we mean that we've been able to plant when we wanted to and the rain fell when it wanted to. It's a beneficial relationship that we like to pretend we have some tiny bit of control over. The deer have kept their distance and the groundhogs (aka Mr. Nibbles and Co.) and the bunnies seem to be busy with other things for now.

Since this is the first of many field updates to come, there's really a lot to catch up on, so we'll try not to bore you guys. Most of the winter wheat that covered our fields during the off season has been tilled right back into the ground to make way for the future seedlings of America. After starting all the way back in February with seeding our onions in trays on the dining room table, most of the seedlings are now making their homes in the fields. The peas are shooting, we have greens galore, tomatoes are in the ground and our fragrant, whimsical herb garden is taking shape. We've even been seeding white clover between our raised crop beds to ensure that the soil is maintained and replenished. This also gives us a chance to strengthen our raking skills. This essential trade skill is not just important for collecting autumn's detritus, it's very important when learning how to properly and very manually mound potatoes.

Other skills that we've been adding to our resumes include shuffle hoeing, beet thinning, speed planting, row jumping, tomato stake driving, soap grating, Olympic speed walking, and tractor surfing. So remember, if you need to give a dog a bath, have 'em run through a dewy wheat field and you can't steer a sled on ice.
