October

All that green is finally slowing down.  One by one, crops are disappearing from the fields.  Winter wheat is planted in their place.  It's the opposite of painting.  It's painting in reverse.  You start with a full canvas, and one by one, using white paint, take out each element.  Your finished painting is a blank canvas.  This is much different than just buying an empty canvas.  What on earth am I rambling about?

We have started marketing ourselves as a CSA for next year.  We've got a mailing list going and have been mailing and e-mailing people our brochure and CSA sign-up form.  We understand that most people will want to sign up in the Spring, but we just couldn't wait to start getting the word out.  The response has been great.  Many people are asking us to reserve a space for them for next season.  The video that Stacey made us also has been a great marketing tool for us.  With over 350 views already, we've gotten several Harrisburg area residents who have inquired more about our farm and CSA!  Facebook really is an incredible way to network.  We have a few people coming for tours over the next week or so.  We also have another shareholder who signed up for the remainder of this season!  We couldn't be happier about this.  It's also a reminder that though things are slowing here, we still do have a Fall crop to harvest that inludes cabbage, cauliflower, carrots, beets, turnips and broccoli.  Hmm... what else is going on?  Butternut squash soup with pear and ginger has been made.  Red lentils with homemade naan has been made.  Apple pie with apples from our very own apple tree has been made.  Pumpkins have been carved.  Heat has been turned ON.  Tonight we are off to North Mountain Pastures for dinner.  We met Anna and Brooks and their son Kaj from North Mountain Pastures a couple weeks ago.  They run a meat CSA that delivers grass-fed beef and pastured chicken to the Harrisburg area.  They also have goats and sheep and pigs!  Their homemade chevre is so delicious it's indescribable.  Tonight we will help out with their evening animal chores and then enjoy a nice farm to table meal.
